The Material Challenge: Send us Your Intro's

[pic via CC License: Jordanhill School D&T Dept's / Flickr]

When planning the Demoscene documentary one of the original ideas was that the episodes would look like actual demos.

On the other hand, when we are producing a “Collective Documentary”, we want to get you scener’s involved as much as possible.

So, we would now humbly ask for your contribution to make us introductions for our five remaining episodes.

What exactly are we looking for?

10 to 15 second long intro sequences that you would want to see as the beginning of each episode of the documentary series.

1. Effect/s or an animation and an audio track.

2. Our logo's which are downloadable below

3. Most important thing is to add your own credits to your product so that
everyone knows it’s made by you.

We’d love if the intro's would have similar effects to what was common in the era that the episode in question is about. So you know, early 1990's demos 3D ducks, torus etc, so we could get the "right" feel for the episodes.

That's pretty much it for the limitations. Nothing really dirty or offensive though, ok!

What do you get out of this?

Fame. The Demoscene Documentary episodes will debut at the Alternative Party -event in late October in Helsinki, Finland. All the episodes will be distributed via YouTube so your work will get a lot of visibility. More importantly, you can make sure that our episodes will start with a bang and have the right look and feel from the beginning.

Timeline of the remaining episodes:

I. The early years Demos: Mental Hangover by Scoopex, Hardwired by Silents and Crionics The first batch of more serious demos, the Amiga influence and moving from the Commodore 64 to the Amiga.

II. Demos: Dope by Complex / Sumea by Virtual Dreams / ZIF by Parallax Phong. 3D scenes take over.

III. Orange & CNCD Demos: X14 and Megablast by Orange, Inside and Deep Psilocybin Mix by CNCD Style and innovation. We discuss the unique and differing styles of Orange and CNCD.

IV. Lifeforce by Andromeda Software Development / Stargazer by Orb and Andromeda / Debris by Farbrausch The 2000 era. Different techniques and styles.

V. Demomusic: Well-known scene composers discuss their work and what makes a great demotune.

Please include the episode that you are referring to on your e-mail.

Additional information

We would expect to get your intros before 1st of October 2010.

The easiest way for us is to get the material in digital formats such as :AVI, MOV, .MP4
Framerate: 25 fps
The size limit is 25mb (gmail doesn’t eat bigger)

If size matters, send your stuff via traditional mail on DVD etc.:

Send us the material or any questions concerning the Material Challenge to: materialchallenge@gmail.com

We’d also hope that it’s ok for us to upload your products to our Facebook-page and our YouTube-channel for everyone to give their thumbs up and comments.

Looking forward seeing your Intro’s and contributions.

Thanks!

ps. There might be some delay in answering your questions during August, so don't get nervous.

Demoscene Documentary - Alternative Party 2010

Demoscene Documentary

About the project

The Demoscene documentary series is going to be presented in it’s entirety at the Alt.Party event in October. The outline and plan for what the demoscene documentary series should contain were discussed in an workshop organized by the Finnish broadcasting company YLE and Alternative Party at the Altparty event in 2009.

Based on the discussion and decisions made at this workshop which was attended by many well known Finnish sceners, a rough outline was created as to which demos and persons should be featured in the documentary. The series focuses mainly on Finnish demos, sceners and groups.

Thomas has been working to make the material as a demoscene documentary series with seven episodes of 10 minutes.

Thomas describes: getting it all together

Based on the workshop discussions, a seven episode arc was mapped out which would contain most of the discussed demos, era and people. Along the way, the content has transformed in various and still is as we try to figure out how we can involve more of the community into the making of the series.

The episodes will roughly be 10 minutes long each.

Several of the episodes will have unique intro’s based on the era that the demos in the episode are from.

Please contact (Arttu Silvast at) demoscene.doc (at) yle.fi if you are interested in contributing.

During July we interviewed over a dozen people in Helsinki for the documentary series including members of the Future Crew, Crankshaft (CNCD), Hoplite (Orange), Visy and Jugi (Komplex).

Right now, we are working on the Future Crew episode which has turned into a two part episode, which will be presented at the Assembly 2010 demoparty on Thursday 5th August right after the opening seremony at 18.30.

We are working on the rest of the episodes throughout the fall and we will talk about the work at Assembly 2010 at a seminar dedicated to the documentary series. If you want to be involved in the series, please attend the seminar where we’ll shed more light on the whole documentary, it’s origins and status.

The rough outline for the episodes is as follows:

  • The early years
Demos: Mental Hangover by Scoopex, Hardwired by Silents and Crionics
The first batch of more serious demos, the Amiga influence and moving from the
    Commodore 64 to the Amiga.
  • Two-part episode
    Future Crew & Second Reality
Future Crew reunion. The group members talk about the history of the group and the
    making of Second Reality.
  • Demos: Dope by Complex / Sumea by Virtual Dreams / ZIF by Parallax
    Phong. 3D scenes take over.
  • Orange & CNCD
Demos: X14 and Megablast by Orange, Inside and Deep Psilocybin Mix by CNCD
Style and innovation. We discuss the unique and differing styles of Orange and CNCD.
  • Lifeforce by Andromeda Software Development / Stargazer by Orb and Andromeda / Debris by Farbrausch
The 2000 era. Different techniques and styles.
  • Demomusic
Well-known scene composers discuss their work and what makes a great demotune.

Time for an update from the trenches

We have shot most of the interview footage for the documentary and are editing right now.

The demoscene documentary is composed of seven episodes with one two-parter which will be presented at Assembly 2010. The rest of the documentary series will be shown at Alt.Party in October, where this whole series was brainstormed in the first place.

Fittingly for Assembly the first episode is about about the legendary Future Crew and the seminal Second Reality demo. As we’ve documented here and on Facebook, we got the key players of Future Crew together for the first time in many years to talk about their experiences about the making of Second Reality way back in 1993 and how they feel about it now.

We will present this episode at Assembly 2010 at a date and time to be revealed later, but it will be presented on the big screen in the main hall.

Demoscene documentary project seminar at Assembly 2010

We are also holding a session at the Assembly seminars where we will talk about the whole Demoscene documentary project, how it’s being assembled (pun intended), why it is important to create the documentary in the first place and about the people behind it.

More importantly, we also want to talk with you about what we could have in the upcoming episodes and how the scene could participate in the episodes by creating visuals and talking about your experiences about some of the demo’s we are presenting in the episodes.

Present at the seminar will be Arttu from YLE, well known scene organizer Visy and Riot and hopefully others.

We’ll have more exact details very soon about times and places at Assembly.

Thanks for your time.

Second Day Shoot ’em up on 7th of July – Photoset on Facebook

So, we finished our first two days of shooting in two different locations in Helsinki. Now, well now we’re going to do a hell of a lot of editing as well as measuring the content we have. The next stop will be Assembly 2010 where the first sequal is released.

[In the pic: Visy waiting to get interviewed. Pic by Arttu Silvast]

Second day went nicely at restaurant We Got Beef. Our guests were: Jukka Kauppinen, Jugi Kaartinen, Nosfe, Hoplite, Der Piipo and Visy. You might want to check out the photoset of the second day at facebook.com/demoscenedoc

Future Crew Reunion on 6th of July - Photoset on Facebook

So, we ended our first interesting day of shooting the document for today. It was a success. Eight memebers of the Future Crew were present and gave an interview.

[In the pic: Gore took all kinds of stuff from the past to the meeting. This set included this twenty years old Future Crew banderol. Pic by: Arttu Silvast]

Most of the guys hadn't seen each other for ten years so you can imagine there was a lot of enjoyment in the air. Present at the H-Town office were Purple Motion, Psi, Trug, Henchman, Skaven, Wildfire, Marvel and Gore.

The FC sequal of the documentary will be released at Assembly Summer 2010, before that you might want to check out some photos of the epic reunion at facebook.com/demoscenedoc
